RESUMO

The adhesive bonding technique together with tooth-colored ceramic material in fabricating veneers is considered one of the greatest achievements in modern prosthodontics. There is a wide range of indications for veneers, but they are most commonly used to establish adequate function and mask tooth discolorations and inappropriate tooth shape, size or position. A large variety of all-ceramic materials with excellent properties is available on the market today. It is challenging to select the material that will provide the best esthetics and function. The present article explains the principles of a modern, individual treatment approach for a young adult patient with multiple diastemata and shade disharmonies in the maxillary anterior teeth. The treatment plan was based on the selection of the appropriate ceramic material and technical procedures to achieve the best esthetic results using veneers. This included analyzing the specific case; defining the treatment goal; determining the precise shade; and selecting the most suitable and appropriate ceramic material, preparation design, fabrication technique, and adhesive concept. It was decided to use the new VITA zirconia-reinforced lithium disilicate press ceramic system and leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic veneering system to fabricate indirect ceramic veneers for all the maxillary anterior teeth. The size, shape, position, and shade of the natural teeth were changed and the diastemata were closed to achieve a more proportional dental relationship. The esthetic and functional goals were achieved and the patient was extremely satisfied with the final outcome.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this clinical study was to compare tooth sensitivity scores and color change values before and 1 day following whitening treatments using different concentrations of whitening agents for in-office and at-home procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 60 participants divided into 3 groups were included in this study. A whitening procedure was carried out in groups using 40% hydrogen peroxide (HP) in in-office treatment, 16% and 10% carbamide peroxide (CP), respectively. Participants rated their tooth sensitivity at the baseline and 1 day following the treatment. The CIElab values were recorded and color differences were calculated. RESULTS: Within each of the whitening treatments, the tooth sensitivity scores significantly increased following the procedure (p<0.05). The largest significant increase in scores was noted in 40% HP in-office whitening treatment, while the lowest increase was noted in 10% CP at-home whitening treatments (p<0.05). The highest color change 1 day following the procedure was found in the 40% HP in-office whitening treatment group (3.3) and it significantly differed from both 16% CP and 10% CP at-home whitening treatments whose color difference was both 2.0, respectively (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: 1 day following the procedure, a low concentrate CP agent for at-home whitening causes the least tooth sensitivity compared to higher concentrate CP for at-home and HP for in-office agents, with the same color change efficacy as higher concentrate CP agent. In case with slight tooth sensitivity reported at the baseline, a 10% CP whitening treatment should be recommended.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study, which consisted of a motivational lecture and hands-on training, was to evaluate the role of oral hygiene education for adolescents. METHODS: The study population included sixty-two high school students between fourteen and fifteen years of age (thirty males and thirty-two females). The response rate was 76.5%. The measurement of oral hygiene level was performed using the modified Green Vermilion Index (GVI). The values were recorded at baseline, one week, three months, and six months after education through motivational lecture and hands-on training was performed. Descriptive and nonparametric statistical methods were used in statistical analysis. Level of significance was 0.05. RESULTS: At the beginning of the study, the GVI of all examined subjects was 3.52 (SD = 0.70). One week after the motivational lecture and training, it decreased to 2.64 (SD = 0.69). Three months later, the level of plaque index had the lowest value (1.44; SD = 0.66). At the end of the study the level of plaque index increased to 2.52 (SD = 0.86). CONCLUSIONS: A significant oral hygiene improvement in adolescents as a result of education was presented. However, due to a decline in oral hygiene level six months after the education, there is a need for educational programmes continuity.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to compare three color parameters assessed on the maxillary right central incisors using a spectrophotometer as the gold standard, along with RAW mobile calibrated and non-calibrated photos in different light conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 dental students participated in the study. CIE L*a*b* values were measured in the middle third of each maxillary right central incisor spectrophotometrically and digitally on RAW mobile dental photos using different light conditions (F-frontal light; L-lateral light; D-lateral light with diffusers; P- polarizing filter on frontal light; H-hybrid filter as combination of frontal light with polarizing filter and lateral lights with diffusers) with LEDs (light emitting diode) in full power, and with gray card calibration. The obtained results were compared. RESULTS: Mean a* and b* values on calibrated, as well as mean L* values on non-calibrated RAW mobile photos did not significantly differ in different light conditions (P>0.05). CIE L*a*b* values on non-calibrated polarizing RAW mobile photos completely matched the same values obtained using a spectrophotometer on the subject's maxillary right central incisor (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Different light conditions and measuring procedures affected CIE L*a*b* values on RAW mobile photos in this study. Within the limitations, non-calibrated RAW mobile photos using a lightening device with polarizing filters on frontal LED light in standardized conditions can be a useful tool for digital dental shade determination.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to compare the microleakage of class V cavities restored by silorane resin with those restored by the methacrylate resin system. Sixty standardized class V cavities were prepared on premolars. The teeth were restored with Filtek(TM) Silorane and Silorane(TM) System Adhesive, Filtek(TM) Silorane and Adper(TM) Easy One and Filtek(TM) Supreme XT and Adper(TM) Easy One. The area and the depth of dye leakage were measured. Considering dye leakage area, the best results were achieved in group I (mean-M=0.114±0.083 mm(2)), then in group III (M=0.384±0.480 mm(2)) and finally in group II (M=5.389±6.587 mm(2)). Considering the depth of dye leakage, there was a significant difference between group I (mean rank-m.r.=1.23±0.44 mm) and II (1.98±0.83 mm), group II and III (1.23±0.40 mm). In this study silorane composite and its adhesive showed less microleakage than the methacrylate composite, and it showed compatibility only with its assigned adhesive. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Less microleakage of silorane restorations could provide better and long lasting composite fillings.
